I wrote and recorded these songs during a bleak but beautiful period, mainly around early 2009. Me and Rachael would take off in a northern direction to the pale green wilderness of Northumberland whenever we could, trying to work out how to escape from unhappy elements of our lives back at home and plot a route forward with everything.
I'd practise the songs in our kitchen on an evening after we'd put our baby to bed. Sometimes Rachael would join me and we'd have a glass of white wine from some chipped old ornate Victorian glasses that she'd picked up from a charity shop.
A few years later the songs felt fully formed and I recorded them on a Saturday afternoon in our dining room with a cheap condenser, the first microphone I ever bought (I'd stolen loads before that).
